Barbera del Monferrato, 1987

Marchesi di Barolo

This 1987 Barbera del Monferrato has a deep ruby hue and a bouquet of ripe plum and cherries, often piqued by a hint of black pepper. Barbera-based wines are known for retaining a balanced acidity even in warmer vintages, making them an ideal partner to tomato-based dishes. These wines are lower in tannin, making them more approachable in their early years. Barbera from Monferrato differs from that made in Asti or Alba in both its provenance and style. Where Alba and Asti produce strongly structured wines, their Monferrato equivalents are more aromatic and often a little less robust.

Baron de Sigognac, 1987

Armagnac (Comes in Original Sigognac Wooden Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in a perfectly simple wooden box.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild , 1987

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

** 88-90 Points - WIne Journal **

" Light brick core. Tawny rim. Delicate leaf/minty nose. Quite earthy and mature on palate. Well-balanced, better than Lafite. Moderate concentration but quite austere and classic. Drink soon. Tasted amongst in a collectors gnome garden in Switzerland at 10am! Tasted again at the SuperBOWL and making perfect sense with a leg of lamb. A slightly diffuse, tobacco scented nose followed by a palate of moderate concentration with cedar and tobacco. Quite a soft texture but with vibrant acidity. A gentleman’s claret." Dolcetto d'Alba, 1987

Prunotto - Cantina S. Cassiano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
